Reducing Inflammation

When your tissues are inflamed your healing ability is drastically reduced. Your body has amazing self-healing powers when it’s given the right environment. Reducing inflammation is a really important factor for this. If things are inflamed the benefits of any other healing work you are doing will be limited. This means reducing inflammtion is a good thing to work for most health conditions. Digestive problems, joint/muscle pain, arthritis and skin issues are all particularly impacted by inflammation. If you are having any of these, reducing inflammation is going to be an important part of your healing journey. Here’s some simple things you can do to help…

Turmeric

Turmeric is probably the best natural anti-inflammatory there is. It’s an obvious one to have at the top of this list. Have it daily via a tea, in food or a supplement. Tjis can help reduce inflammation and improve gut health and other inflammatory related issues.

Less sugar

Sugar can make things more acidic which will usually make any inflammation worse. Reducing sugar can really improve things. It’s not good to switch to diet stuff though as this causes other issues (such as strokes and heart issues). If you are getting sugar cravings the best thing to do is have some chromium and fruit first.

Chromium balances your blood sugar and helps stop sugar cravings. Sugar cravings show your chromium is low. It’s a really common deficiency, especially if you’ve had a stage of having too much sugar. You usually need to take it for 3-4 weeks to meet your body’s needs. Take a natural or food source supplement for best results. Without the cravings it’s much easier to reduce sugar.

The other thing to try is fruit first. Fruit has so much fibre in, which the body uses to digest sugar. So much so that blood sugar is less impacted by fruit than brown bread. If you do really feel you need a sugar hit having some fruit first can help this. It also gives you fibre to help digest any sugar you then have after.

Massage

Massage is great for circulation which in turn is really helpful for reducing inflammation. Simply massage around the area that is having trouble. A natural oil like coconut is best if you are using an oil as many chemicals are inflammatory. If you have digestive issues that are linked to inflammation (which is most of them), then abdominal massage is really helpful. Not only does it reduce inflammation but physically helps the digestive system flowing and rebooted, clearing blockages and easing tension. A great way to help digestive inflammatory conditions.

Increase Vegetables & Healthy Gut

Vegetables – particularly green vegetables – are great for helping reduce inflammation. Try get a good range of fruit and veg so you have plenty of fibre and the right nutrients to help your body bring down inflammation. For a healthy gut biome, it’s a good idea to have 30 different plants each week (although that includes grains/potatoes/herbs etc.). This a good number to aim for to get a decent range of plants and all the nutrients you need. Balanced gut bacteria will help your body to reduce inflammation…check out the blog on healthy gut for more information.

Green powders

Chlorella, spirulina, wheat grass and barley are all very dark greens great for reducing inflammation, helping the liver, alkalizing your system, detoxing and they are very nutrient rich. It’s a really easy way to reduce inflammation and give your body a boost. You can take these in powder form and add them to smoothies or juice. They aren’t quite tasty enough to just add to water. You can also take them in supplement form.

Plenty of water

Dehydration can quickly lead to inflammation. It has a really negative impact on your tissues and causes issues fast. Try to have at least 2L of water a day to reduce inflammation and help your body heal. Remember herbal tea without caffeine such as mint or camomile count towards your water intake too. Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol as these have a diuretic effect on your system. This means you pee out more of the water you’re drinking. If you are having more than 2-3 cups of caffeine/units of alcohol per day you probably need to drink a bit more water to compensate. Alcohol has a lot of sugar too which doesn’t help either. It’s good to not overdo it if you are having symptoms that can be linked to inflammation, as it can make things worse.

Less stress

Stress and the tension it causes will make inflammation worse. Your body needs good circulation to be working at it’s best and stopping inflammation occurring. Stress causes a lot of problems with this. You can’t always control the source of your stress but you can impact how it affects you. Deep breathing, meditation, journalling, walking in nature, yoga and lemon balm tea are all just some of things that are helpful for reducing stress. You can do all of them yourself at home. If you need more help seeking out therapy is a good idea too. Don’t wait for your physical symptoms to get worse before you take some action.
