Coeliac’s – recovery and healing the gut after diagnosis

Coeliac’s can give people severe digestive issues. Once it’s diagnosed and gluten is removed often symptoms can improve. Without the main trigger flare ups can reduce and symptoms can ease. It’s not uncommon though for a lot of digestive issues to remain. Frustratingly this can be for months or even years after gluten has been removed from the diet. This is because of how much coeliac’s inflames and damages the gut before diagnosis. Inflammation makes it very difficult for the damage already done to repair itself, meaning symptoms such as pain, cramps, bloating, diarrhea and more can persist.  Luckily there are things you can do to help this…

Massage

Abdominal massage relieves pressure and tension caused by discomfort and pain from digestive issues that Coeliac’s will have left you with. It also helps to physically move blockages caused by gluten which the digestive system struggles to do by itself.

Blockages can stay in the gut for ages and fester, damaging the gut wall. This makes digestion harder and inflames the area even more. As the colon struggles to process these blockages (which aren’t always gluten – it can be any tricky-to-digest food and most food is tricky to digest during a flare up), it stretches out to create pockets so other food can pass. Since Coeliac’s can often take years to diagnose, many sufferer’s colons are full of these of these pockets which are inflamed and add extra pressure to a struggling system.  Moving these blockages on with massage also stretches out the colon allowing it to release the pockets and get back into a better alignment.

Massage also boosts circulation which helps digestion and reduces inflammation. Combining all this help into a treatment means massage can drastically reduce inflammation and improve digestion, finally allowing the gut to heal the damage Coeliac’s has done. It can sometimes happen quite quickly when gluten has already been removed from the diet. Your digestive system just needs a little extra push to get back to normal. You also learn to massage yourself in a session to speed up the healing process and can then work on yourself anytime you have any digestive problems.

Turmeric

As mentioned above, inflammation can be a big factor with ongoing Coeliac’s symptoms. Turmeric is a great, natural anti-inflammatory so it can help here. Having it daily via a tea, in food or a supplement can help reduce inflammation and improve gut health. Coeliac’s is such an inflammatory condition that working on reducing it really helps things.

Mint and Ginger

These are also great for improving digestion and easing symptoms and can help with inflammation too. The easiest way to have these is probably herbal tea. 2-3 cups a day is great for helping ease uncomfortable digestion.

Avoid too much sugar

Probably the most inflammatory food you can have is sugar. It can really inflame the gut and cause issues with gut flora and hormones. It’s best not to have too much and definitely best not to have it daily if you are already having inflammation issues. If you are getting sugar cravings then chromium can really help you reset. Chromium is what your body uses to control your blood sugar. If you’ve eaten a lot of sugar at some stage the chromium is low, blood sugar fluctuates and then you get cravings. Taking a food source chromium (and reaching for fruit first if you get cravings) for 3 weeks can help totally reset things. Without the cravings it’s much easier to eat less sugar. Water

Dehydration is a big factor in inflammation and makes digestion more sluggish. Try and get a least 2L of water a day. Herbal tea that has no caffeine counts too (like mint or ginger mentioned above). If you’re having more than 2-3 cups of caffeinated drinks or units of alcohol a day then try have more than 2L. It’s good to remember green tea and decaf tea/coffee still have caffeine in – just a less. Coeliac’s makes digestion really sluggish as well and plenty of water helps get that back to normal.

Give your gut some breaks

Giving your digestive system some breaks can really allow it some healing time. Intermittent fasting or liquid meals can help here. Having a period of the day (that coincides with when you sleep) where you don’t eat for about 16 hours can help your digestive system deal with some of the other things it needs to sort out. Make sure you still have plenty of water though so you’re gut doesn’t become sluggish.  Liquid meals such as soup and smoothies can be another good way to give your digestive system and easier time. Swapping a meal or 2 a day for a while can help everything reset.
